Although this cloudy morning hid the top of the Ulm Cathedral, we were not deterred.
We climbed the towers to the second stage and explored the interior of this cathedral. The foundation stone was laid in 1377 for this building that is now known as the tallest church in the world, though before 1901 it was the tallest building in Europe. It is said that on a clear day you can see for kilometres. In today's fog we were happy to see the Chrismas Markt below.
The organ features 113 pipes. We were privileged to hear the organist practicing while we were climbing the tower. The sounds were mesmerizing. During World War II much of Ulm was levelled during bombing raids. Miraculously the Ulm Muenster remained intact except for some stained glass windows. Slowly these windows are being replaced.
A chapel at the rear of this building houses this Madonna from 1491.
