May 13, 1917

Following the instructions of the Angel, the children went to the Cova da Iria. There the Virgin Mary appeared to them above a small Holm Oak tree.  Jacinta and Francisco sat under this Holm Oak tree while Mary spoke to Lucia at the spot where the Apparation Chapel (covered by the large glass structure) now sits. 

The Virgin Mary appeared to the children 6 times. She had promised to meet them on the thirteen day of each month. But in August 1917, the local Administrator took the children to jail because they were causing a fuss and he did not believe the children. 

After getting out of jail, the children were visited by Our Lady on August 19 at Valinhos around 4:00 pm., who said to them "Pray! Pray much and make sacrifices for sinners, for many souls are gong to hell because they have nobody who prays and makes sacrifices for them."
